Foam Rolling, Stretching, or Rest Day? Here’s When to Choose What

Recovery is part of the work—not a break from it.

Sore from squats? Tight from sitting all day? Wondering if you should roll it out, stretch it out, or just take a nap?

Here’s how to figure out what your body’s asking for.

Foam Rolling = Targeted tension relief

Foam rolling is a form of self-myofascial release (SMR) that can improve blood flow, reduce muscle tightness, and boost mobility.

According to NASM, it’s a great warm-up or cool-down tool—especially on days where you’re feeling stiff or heavy.

Best for:

  • Post-workout soreness

  • Pre-workout warm-up

  • Chronic tension (like tight quads or shoulders)

Coach tip: Move slowly and breathe into it. Don’t rush it like a checklist.

Stretching = Range + calm

Harvard Health reminds us that regular stretching helps prevent injury, supports posture, and reduces pain over time. It’s also a great way to check in with your body (and stress levels).

Stretching is great for improving flexibility, calming the nervous system, and relieving postural tightness (hi, desk jobs).

Best for:

  • After workouts

  • Before bed

  • Stress relief

Dynamic vs. static?

  • Before training: dynamic (controlled movement)

After training: static (deep holds)

😴 Rest Day = Your muscle-building day

The Sleep Foundation emphasizes how essential full rest days are for muscle repair, mental clarity, and injury prevention. Your body grows stronger during rest—not just in the gym.

Rest days help your body repair, rebuild, and come back stronger.

Best for:

  • Once or twice a week

  • When you’re feeling wiped, sick, or unusually sore

  • Mental recharge

Active rest = bonus points
A walk, stretch session, or yoga class counts as rest. Movement helps recovery as long as it’s gentle.

TL;DR:

  • Foam roll when you’re stiff or sore

  • Stretch to improve flexibility or calm down

  • Rest to rebuild and come back stronger

Recovery isn't a luxury—it’s how you keep showing up. Your body deserves it.
